Kent

Kent has been called the gateway to England. Across the narrow stretch of English Channel that divides England from the European continent, have come invaders, visitors, kings and missionaries.

Gaia's Kent titles have been divided into three seperate regions - East Kent, Heartland Kent and Maritime Kent. Each video has its own special charm and appeal.

Discovering The Kent Heartland

This video explores a county richly endowed with beauty, history and tradition. Its castles, medieval mansions, towns and villages are a living tapestry. Great men and events have placed Kent prominently in world affairs. At Westerham, Winston Churchill and General Wolfe made their homes, Leeds Castle was the residence of many an English king and at Hever Castle, Henry VIII wooed Anne Boleyn. The county is a spiritual place too, with ancient stone circles where people once worshipped the sun and in more recent times, Carmelite monks have returned to their Aylesbury Priory.

Discovering East Kent

This video takes a line from Whitstable down to Folkestone. Truly, this is the garden of England, with all roads converging on Cantherbury. North Sea ports connect Kent to the European continent, while Sandwich sleeps, its harbour silted up from the sea. Inland, ancient markers tell of Kent's illustrious history; a Viking longboat where Hengist and Horsa landed, great castles at Deal and the Roman lighthouse at Dover.
